According to Making the Grade: Online Education in the United States, 2006, a report by the Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C), online learning in the US continues to grow, with nearly 3.2 million students taking an online course in Fall 2005, up from 2.3 million the previous year.
Other findings of the report:
- Online students are mostly undergraduates and are more likely to be attending institutions that award Associates degrees than their face-to-face counterparts;
- Most very large institutions have online classes, with the small private four year colleges being the least likely to have online programs;
- The majority of academic leaders surveyed rated the learning outcomes the same as or superior to face-to-face instruction.
